Coding with Arduino
Call to Schedule your Private Class! • 90 Minutes • Intermediate
Arduino is a simple computer that can sense and control more of the physical world than your normal desktop computer. For example, an Arduino could be programmed to recognize the sound of a knock at the front door and then unlatch the lock. Arduino boards are based on an easily accessible development environment for writing code and software, making it perfect for projects small and large. Arduino can also be used to develop interactive objects, like a light that turns on and off in response to a hang being waved in front of a switch, making it the perfect tool to help watch your technological projects physically come to life! Arduino code is based off of Java and C++, the core programming languages that have become the foundation for coding. In this course, each student will learn the basics of these languages and write code to make their own technology project or idea come alive. Students receive their own Arduino kit, and actually code and build their creations to take home and use, complete with an Arduino Uno, Arduino case, LEDS, servo, toy motor, sensors and more!
3D Printing Intro

Normal printers print ink left to right, but 3D printers print plastic left to right, front to back, and up and down! As the plastic is printed, it solidifies into whatever 3D form you design, from a handy kitchen or office tool to home-made toys to anything your mind envisions! In this enrollment, students will first learn the basics of 3D design and printing by applying math, science, and technology skills in a fun way. Students start by creating a house, anything from their own future mansions to lunar dwellings. Then, students work to master 3-D printing and design skills by re-creating a scene from around town or a made up location, exploring their creativity and making anything from recreations of their school grounds to a made up city, whatever their minds can come up with! This course offers a great introduction to get excited about the possibilities of 3D printing and technology!

Arduino boards are based on a development environment similar to Java and C++, making it perfect for projects small and large. Each student will learn the basics of these languages, write code and make the correct connections to make their own project or invention come alive. Micro controller inventions need to be wired correctly in addition to being coded correctly, a wonderful practice in engineering, details, patience and more! Stop Motion Filmmaking
The featured technique as seen in movies like Wallace and Gromit and The Nightmare Before Christmas, stop motion filmmaking is an educational and unique way to get into filmmaking and technology. In these film-focused classes, students learn about the physics and science of stop motion animation and the way our eyes perceive movement to use this technique and create a short film. Stop motion animation employs real-world objects, like clay or 3D printed creations, photographed one frame of film at a time, over and over again, moving the real-world object ever so-slightly after each frame, eventually creating a short animated video when all the frames are “stitched” together. While learning the technical end making these videos, students also learn about the importance of the various elements of writing and storytelling, like story-arcs, content, and key moments and incorporate technology too! At the end of the class, bring home your own Stop Motion Creation!

This easy-to-assemble mBot provides infinite possibilities to learn about STEM through MacInspires challenges including constructing the robot, pluging all the components in and programming it to avoid obstables or to battle in a Sumo ring with classmate’s bots!
Monthly Makers & littleBits Meetup!
Join us for a Sunday of Making with littleBits, circuits, Arduino and more! Bring in your own project or dig in with littleBits kits available to use for free!
littleBits makes a growing library of electronic modules that snap together with magnets for prototyping, learning, and fun. Each module has a specific function (motors, lights, sound, sensors, buttons, thresholds, pulse, wireless control, etc.), and all modules snap to make larger circuits. Building circuits is simple and intuitive, allowing anyone to create powerful, sophisticated electronics in a matter of seconds.
MacInspires will present an Intro Workshop to littlebits, covering the different modules by creating fun projects! We often participate in littleBits Challenges, contests to create with prizes for the best designs! Email, call or visit our Meetup.com page to sign up!
Larchmont:
Sunday, August 14th, 1:00 – 3:00
MAGLEV TRACK
MacInspires built a two lane MagLev Track for students to test and race their design and electricity skills! Using 3D Design Software students create unique maglev cars to fit the track, complete with places to glue on the magnets. We have wind fans ready to attach to the cars to have them travel down the track. We will measure how much weight they can hold, the balance of the car, how fast they are and other variables. The track is electrified, providing current to the vehicle and fan, similar to a slot car track, enabling students to learn how their favorite toys and real trains work!
WEARABLES
Wearable technology, or wearables, are clothing and accessories incorporating computer and electronic technologies, like an activity tracker. Designs often incorporate working functions and features, but may also purely exist for fun or art! In this class students will create their own wearable to take home and enjoy! Make a scarf that changes colors, or a hat that tells the temperature!
MICROCONTROLLER ROBOTICS
Build a robot chassis to hold motors, wheels, it’s microcontroller brain, ultrasonic eyes and more! Students create and code robots cars using Arduino Microcontrollers to achieve multiple challenges. First challenge, Complete the build! Second challenge, Code the bot to move in certain directions! Third challenge, add eyes so it can sense where it’s going and adjust accordingly! And Lastly, using your knowledge of Arduino and Robotics, add your own idea to the bot!
Prerequisite: Introduction to Arduino
Game Design
Students learn how to conceive, build and test their own two dimension iOS game! After being shown how to create a simple app, each student then creates their game. Using a visual programming language students drag and drop commands on the computer to create whatever their game requires. We then link the app to an iPad to try out! Apps can be uploaded online to enjoy at home.
